Learning Specialists/Exceptional Education

Prince George provides a wide range of services to meet the needs of all our students. North Elementary has a Child Study Team composed of specialists who assist the regular education teacher when a child is identified as needing the additional support of an individually designed implementation plan.

PG Public Schools participates in various Child Find activities to identify children with disabilities who may be eligible for special education and related services through an Individual Educational Program (IEP). Once identified as eligible, the child’s IEP team develops a plan to meet annual educational goals, identify needed classroom accommodations and modifications and decide what special education and related services are needed to implement the plan. The team meets thereafter at least annually to review this plan. Parents are an integral part of the IEP team and the IEP process. Implementation of an initial IEP, and any subsequent major changes in the plan, require parental consent. Parents are also important members of the PG Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC). This committee meets regularly to review special education programs provided by Prince George Schools.

Students are educated at or as near as possible to their home school and with non-disabled peers to the extent this is possible. The IEP team determines appropriate services and supports for each child.

For more details on this process and on your procedural safeguards, please contact the PG Parent Resource Center at 804-733-2700.

*Prince George County also participates in the Virginia Comprehensive Services Act (CSA) which provides shared funding for children identified as “at-risk” by a Family Assessment and Planning Team (FAPT).
